NTEF to Clarins USA - Stop Using Peanut Ingredients Without Warning Notices

The National Toxic Encephalopathy Foundation (NTEF) is publicly asking Clarins: When are you going to start implementing warnings to consumers that you are incorporating peanut related ingredients in your cosmetics?

In October of 2006, the NTEF became aware of three products with various peanut ingredients, now there are seven that we are questioning. Clarins removed peanuts in some products and incorporated them into newer products. The products are:

Body Firming Cream
Extra Firming Day Cream Special for Dry Skin
After Sun Replenishing Moisture Care for Face
Clarins Aromatic Plant Day Cream (All Skin Types)
Moisture Quenching Hydra-Balance Cream
Sun Control Stick, Very High Protection
Extra-Comfort Toning Lotion for Dry or Sensitized Skin

The French refer to peanuts as groundnuts and do not equate them with any allergic reactions or health risks. If Clarins, a French corporation, does not recognize peanuts as an allergy, how can they label for sale in the United States these products claiming that they are “allergy tested”?

Most people who are concerned about peanut allergies are accustomed to the federal requirement to have the allergen visibly noticeable on the box. The major problem we have determined is that consumers predominately throw out the boxes that products come in. Without a notification on both the box and possibly on the actual product consumers are left in the dark.

The Food and Drug Administration who oversees cosmetics and since peanuts create a known health risk, without proper notification regarding peanuts they can be construed as mislabeled and as such would be in violation of federal law.

Following either ingestion or inhalation, a person with peanut allergies can experience a severe, life-threatening allergic reaction called anaphylaxis. This can lead to:

-constricted airways in the lungs
-severe lowering of blood pressure and shock ("anaphylactic shock")
-suffocation by swelling of the throat

Each year in the U.S., it is estimated that anaphylaxis to food results in:
-30,000 emergency room visits
-2,000 hospitalizations
-150 deaths [1]

Clarins: Beauty should be not harmful to anyone, please label accordingly- NTEF

Undisclosed Truth: Clarins

We are a watchdog organization out to protect the unsuspecting public from deceptive words used on cosmetic and fragrance packages. In order to be effective and thorough, you cannot take a broad brush approach. We have verified corporate documents from Clarins that fully confirm our assertions that they did in fact with malice, greed and forethought sell their unsafe products to the American consumer. Along with failing to warn consumers regarding ingredients in which the chemical, physical and toxicological properties and data have not been thoroughly investigated, determined or evaluated.

Did you have normal thyroid levels then discover that your thyroid levels had changed? If so, did you start wearing Angel Perfume? If in the affirmative, you may want to discuss with your physician the possibility that the endocrine disrupting chemical additive Benzophenone-2*, as a possible cause for the change. As only your physician can confirm this association.

Finally, no marketing slants, only the cold, hard core scientific documentation regarding the ingredients. Natural and botanically based products should be just that: Natural and Botanical. Not ingredients that are suspected of causing breast cancer, harm to the unborn fetus, tumorigens, mutagens, reproductive effectors, respiratory irritants, to reference a few.
Did you wear Angel Perfume during your pregnancy? Have you been told that your child is exhibiting mild neurological dysfunctions or less favourable task-oriented and social-emotional behaviour? You may want to discuss the possibility of an exposure to Coumarin with your medical practitioner. As only your physician can confirm this association.

You may be asking yourself, can we prove these statements. The Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) will confirm our allegations. Until Clarins removes these toxic ingredients from their products they will remain under investigation of our classification of deceptive marketing claims.
The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics "is a coalition working to protect your health by calling for the elimination of chemicals used in the cosmetics industry linked to cancer, birth defects and other health problems."

As of May 28, 2008, Clarins is STILL refusing to sign onto the Safe Cosmetics Campaign. Demand accountability for their failure to truly be natural and botanically based. Consumers ask yourself, if Clarins is all that they claim, why haven't they signed on to the campaign? The answer is extremely simple, they can't pass the requirements to qualify.

The launching of their new line called "My Blend" by Olivier Courtin-Clarins, is in our opinion an excuse to overcharge for using his name. It is well known in the cosmetics industry that utilizing a reference to a dermatologist automatically ascribes more creditability to a cosmetic product. That affords these companies the right to charge more for these products. We are currently working on disclosing what we consider questionable chemical ingredients in the "My Blend" line by Olivier Courtin-Clarins.

To the Stockholders: Please be aware that all the references are documented and the photographs are from products currently on retail shelves in the United States and which we have purchased.

As a courtesy to those who have stock:

Clarins SA (PINK:CRASF) Clarins Grupo (PINK:GRCNL)

We will allow you to determine if the information in the financials correlates to what was described and what is actually being sold according to the package ingredients, ie natural and botanical. We opine that there are more questionable chemical ingredients than beneficial natural or botanically based ingredients in the finished products.

In reviewing other products by Clarins, we have discovered an additional two dozen labeling violations. Petitions are in the final editing and legal review stages.

Medical doctors who have no financial interest have confirmed that stretch mark creams do not work. Clarins references regarding dermatologist tested, we believe is a reference to one of the founders sons, Oliver Courtin-Clarins who apparently disagrees. We do not believe that he is part of the American College of Obstetrician and Gynocologists who have stated "that we can rub whatever we like on our pregnant bellies, but we can't stop the stretch marks." We question the science behind Clarins product which claim to prevent stretch marks.

Have you suffered any ill effects or injuries from any Clarins products? If so, our Toxicologist is ready to assist your legal team with his decades of experience in such matters. Remember "beauty should not be injurious to anyone". Most importantly immediately notify the Food and Drug Administration of any adverse reaction/s you may experience.

Clarins has a propensity towards using the following known toxins/allergens in their natural and botanically based cosmetics and fragrances.

We invite you to peruse the health risks as defined in the MSDS and allow you to determine, do these toxic ingredients equate to what you have perceived in your mind as natural and botanical? We have outlined for easy reference a Summary of the health risks associated with the MSDS that we were able to locate.
